Roll Tooling Design – Conventional Method

The conventional design is most commonly used when running multiple tube and pipe sizes made of mild steel with a T/D ratio (thickness divided by diameter) of between 3-8%. If the gauge thickness is below 3% or above 8%, other styles of design are recommended, such as Edgeform, Versatile Edgeform, or W-Style. The single-radius design is very forgiving during setup, since it is not as critical that it be centered like the other breakdown styles.

The standard edgeform method of tooling design is the most widely used in the tube and pipe industry. This method is used to form a wide range of material and gauges from mild steel to higher tensile (tension). Tooling made with this design is easier to set up than tooling made with the conventional design.

The main purpose of the fin passes is to condition the strip edges to prepare them for welding. The process must reduce the strip girth against the fin blade to accomplish this, and properly set the body of the strip. The fin passes generate a great deal of drive if used properly.
