Roll-Kraft, a leading producer of tube & pipe tooling and roll forming tooling, has installed new CNC machines at its Mentor, Ohio, and Woodbridge, Canada, locations that will allow both plants to increase their capacity of providing large-diameter roll tooling. The newly installed CNC at the headquarters plant in Mentor, Ohio, has the capacity to produce 40” diameter rolls. This additional CNC at the Canadian factory has a capacity of producing 52” diameter rolls.

Growing requests for bigger tooling have created a demand which very few manufacturers can meet. Each of these large-diameter solid-steel rolls is very dense, very heavy, and requires high-capacity equipment to produce and handle. The new equipment allows Roll-Kraft to continue to meet that need.
Including the Canadian factory, Roll-Kraft produces tooling daily on 50 CNC machines, the most in the U.S. and Canada, which allows the company to meet required deliveries 98% of the time.
In addition to the two plants mentioned, Roll-Kraft maintains another facility in Frankfort, Illinois (Roll-Kraft Northern). The main phone numbers for the company are (888) 953-9400 or (440) 205-3100. The fax number is (440) 205-3110, and the web site is located at roll-kraft.com.

November, 2012 - MENTOR, OH.
The presentation on “Reducing Scrap on Tube and Pipe Mills” by Roll-Kraft’s Robert Sladky and Bret Molnar at the Fabtech Conference in Las Vegas was met with a 35% increase in attendance from the average of past conference events. Robert Sladky, Vice President of Tube Mill Engineering, and Bret Molnar, Senior Technical Advisor, are well known for the training they have provided to the industry over many years.
In addition to the increased attendance, the overall makeup of the group was encouraging for the tube and pipe industry as a whole.
“Over one-third of the attendees at this year’s presentation were from firms that are interested in ‘getting into’ tube and pipe production by converting from their manual fabrication processes to tube and pipe mill lines,” said Sladky. “This is especially good news, since the number of active tube and pipe producers has been steadily decreasing over the past 15-20 years.”
According to Sladky, the audience very actively participated in the session by raising many good questions during the presentation. Further discussions continued well after the class was finished.

Roll-Kraft has upgraded the tube and pipe strip width calculator that is available on www.roll-kraft.com. It is now possible to execute calculations directly from a web browser or mobile device, without having to download any files.
Often, questions arise about tube and pipe sizing and the new strip width calculator is a simple way to get the information quickly. The website features two calculator functions. One calculates the width of the strip that goes on the mill. The other calculates square and rectangular tube and pipe equivalents for round tube. Each calculator provides useful estimates that will be of benefit to tube and pipe manufacturers. Simply enter the various criteria required for the calculation, such as dimensions and type of material, to obtain the information needed.

MENTOR, OH - November 2012
Roll-Kraft, a leading provider of tooling to the tube and pipe industry, has added a video to the company website that features floating flange rolls. The new video shows tube and pipe customers how they can utilize these rolls to produce tube and pipe that is free of any unwanted marks.
Normally, roll marks appear as a result of the speed difference between the throat diameter (which is the smallest diameter of the roll and also the drive point) and the outer flange rolls within a given pass on the mill. During production, the surface speed at the throat area of the roll is lower than the surface speed at the largest diameter, which causes the roll to leave marks on the end product.
Floating flange rolls are designed in several pieces. As they are positioned on the stand, the center piece is keyed so that it turns at the speed of the mill. The two outside pieces are able to spin freely, allowing them to turn at the speed of the material being formed as it moves through the mill. Since the material and outside rolls are now spinning at the same speed, roll marks are eliminated. This is a much-improved process when marks on the product are a concern. The floating flange roll video demonstrates this process very clearly.
Roll-Kraft has been designing floating flange rolls for over 30 years. These rolls are custom designed to meet the specifications for each application, and Roll-Kraft stands behind them with a 100% performance guarantee, which also applies to other Roll-Kraft products.

MENTOR, OH - October 2012 - Roll-Kraft, a leading provider of tooling to the tube and pipe industry, has added a video to the company website that illustrates the features and benefits of tube and pipe split rolls. The video gives a detailed explanation of how using split and bolted rolls will benefit companies that produce tube and pipe. It also details the considerable cost savings possible due to the fact that split rolls can last 10-15 times longer than solid rolls.
Traditionally, roll tooling has consisted of solid steel rolls installed on a mill to form tube and pipe. This configuration, while quite productive and completely acceptable, can be improved upon by using split rolls instead of solid rolls.
As a result of the wearing process during manufacturing, traditional solid rolls must be reground or replaced. When regrinding solid rolls, the diameters must be reduced in order to resurface the worn areas properly. In doing so, the metal line is reduced and the speed is decreased. This is a problem if the mill does not have variable-speed adjustment and the ancillary stands (side roll, weld box, straightener unit, and cut-off unit) are not adjustable. However, when using split rolls, the contours can be reground without changing or affecting the throat diameter of the roll. This allows the split roll to be used 10-15 times longer than the solid steel roll, by adding less costly spacers to the setup. This is a dramatic increase in the life of the roll and a substantial savings in expenditures.

Mentor, OH July, 2012 - Roll-Kraft recently joined with
’s Capstone Project to introduce students to manufacturing. The project participants visited Roll-Kraft and went through a simulated transaction of entering an order and taking it through each step of the process to completion. They followed the order from sales to engineering, then to the factory floor for several processes, including cutting the steel, grinding, machining, laser etching, testing, polishing, and doing the final inspection. Each student spent time in multiple departments in the office and in the factory. They also had one-on-one time with Roll-Kraft team members, who explained the process at hand, while the students observed the actual activities of the workday.
The Capstone Project is another link between Roll-Kraft and the community to connect students to various fields they may be considering for their future. These fields include inside, outside, and technical sales, design engineering, project management, and the many facets of manufacturing.
Students are often surprised by the technology involved in production. Most processes are performed by machines, with proper input from the operator. Mentor, OH - July, 2012
Roll-Kraft is pleased to announce the addition of a Faro Edge measuring arm to its inspection area. The unit will aid in providing more accurate and efficient service to Roll-Kraft customers.
Roll-Kraft is a manufacturer of roll tooling used by tube & pipe and roll forming companies to produce a large variety of products. Often, customers will need a new roll, but will have no prints or drawings to use for manufacturing. The Faro Edge measuring arm will be helpful in analyzing the needed data to develop an accurate drawing. This reverse-engineering process will be less time-consuming than previous methods.

In addition, the arm will be used to inspect tube and pipe and roll forming rolls coming to Roll-Kraft for reconditioning. The unit will speed up the process of obtaining measurements and will download that information electronically for use by the engineering team. This information will be useful in determining wear patterns and areas that are out of spec.
As another value, the arm is portable and can be used by a Roll-Kraft technician on-site at the customer’s facility to determine the proper alignment of their tooling on their mill, so their setups will be accurate and will allow for quick tooling changeovers.
Roll-Kraft expects the Faro Edge measuring arm to aid in the ability to verify product quality and identify problem situations for its customers before they become major. This will allow Roll-Kraft to continue its goal of providing top-notch products and services to the tube & pipe and roll forming industry.
