MENTOR, OH - May, 2012
Roll-Kraft and a team of students from Kirtland High School recently participated in this year’s RoboBot competition at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, OH. The event was sponsored by Alliance for Working Together (AWT – http://www.thinkmfg.com), a consortium working with the Auburn Career Center and local companies to promote careers in manufacturing.
The RoboBot competition has become an annual event. This year, 24 teams of students were matched with local manufacturing companies. Over a period of months, the students visited the companies each week. They designed, engineered, manufactured, and tested their robots, participating in every step of the process, guided by the expertise of the sponsoring company. The final culmination on April 28th as all of the teams came together to test their skills as they battled to be the last surviving robot. This year, Roll-Kraft and the students from Kirtland High School fought the opposition and won 3rd place in the final event.
Roll-Kraft holds a prominent position in designing and manufacturing roll tooling for the tube and pipe and roll forming industry. The company is very focused on promoting careers in manufacturing and is involved in many events throughout the year with this goal. It is a top priority. Manufacturing is an important option for students to consider. It brings stability to the community and provides a road to a successful future for many.

Mentor, OH., April, 2012 - Roll-Kraft recently hosted its latest student-focused educational event to promote manufacturing careers within the local community.
The company opened its doors and offered high school students the opportunity to tour the Roll-Kraft facility and learn first-hand about the manufacturing environment. Nearly sixty students were involved in tours over a two-day period. The students were escorted through the offices and factory by Roll-Kraft personnel, who described and demonstrated the various steps involved in manufacturing, from computer design, to full production, and finally to seeing a completed product come off the machine. For most of the students, this was their first exposure to the modern manufacturing process, and they found their visit to Roll-Kraft to be a very beneficial learning experience.
Roll-Kraft is a member of AWT (Alliance for Working Together) and worked with the group to coordinate this event. AWT promotes careers in manufacturing to students, and the group is very active in Northeast Ohio in educating students and correcting any old, outdated misconceptions related to jobs in manufacturing. AWT promotes the fact that today’s manufacturing process is high-tech, and factories are clean and much better environments than in previous generations. These jobs provide high pay for skilled work and are clearly a viable path for success for the next generation.
The company plans to continue its relationships with several local schools and college groups to engage the youth in events that will encourage them to be excited about becoming involved in manufacturing as a future career choice.

MENTOR, OH., February, 2012
Roll-Kraft designs and produces roll tooling for the tube & pipe and roll forming industry. The company has recently completed an upgrade to its tube & pipe and roll form tooling design software. This improvement will allow engineers to optimize the new applications to now include the design of the bearingless floating flange. It will cut engineering time almost in half when designing these products. Each individual piece will be drawn and the program will produce an assembly drawing. This will not only ease the process of engineering, but also standardize the processes of the machine programmers and production workers as well.
As many companies want shorter lead times for their tooling orders, Roll-Kraft continues to look for ways to improve every facet of the manufacturing operation and devotes considerable effort, time, and resources to be the supplier who can meet short lead-time requests. On-going day-by-day and month-by-month improvements allow Roll-Kraft to maintain its position as a leader in providing roll tooling to the tube and pipe and roll forming industries.

Roll-Kraft, a leading producer of tube and pipe tooling and roll form tooling, has an on-going relationship with various educational facilities to help promote technical career options. The latest event was held at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, OH.
The occasion featured Mr. Ken Platt, a CNC Operator/Programmer at Roll-Kraft, who presented information to a class of students in the College Tech Prep program. These junior and senior high school students are getting a head start on a technical career. Mr. Platt, who participated in this College Tech Prep program several years ago, discussed with the students the opportunities available in the manufacturing field and explained how industry has changed over the years, with cleaner surroundings and electronic technology to do the heavy work.
Mr. Platt used an exhibit of Roll-Kraft’s roll tooling to demonstrate the process of rolling coiled steel into a finalized product and also showed videos of Roll-Kraft’s factory. Roll-Kraft’s rolls are used to produce a multitude of products for the entire world, including such items as pipe for oil wells, guardrails, doors, round, square, and rectangular furniture and lighting products, and automotive and building products.
Roll-Kraft plans to continue to encourage students to pursue a manufacturing career by conducting similar classes on a regular basis.

Roll-Kraft’s Vice President of Tube Mill Engineering, Robert A. Sladky will be presenting, “Tube and Pipe Mill Set Up” on Wednesday, March 21st. from 10:15AM—11:15AM at Fabtech’s first conference in Canada - Fabtech Canada 2012. The conference will be held March 20-22, 2012 at the Toronto Congress Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
This presentation is tailored to address and strengthen the “weak links” in the mill operations in regard to proper tube and pipe mill set up. Problems and Solutions will be outlined throughout the presentation in the major sections of forming, welding and sizing sections.
Managers, engineers, mill operators, and maintenance personnel will all benefit from this presentation. It specifically addresses the importance of properly setting up each and every pass on the mill per the design of the tooling,
The entire focus of this presentation is to establish a “standard” for everyone to follow. Establishing these “standards and procedures” will help identify problems and implement corrective measures that will build morale, improve product quality, reduce scrap, increase the life of the tooling, and produce greater profits.

MENTOR, OH - December 2011
Roll-Kraft, a leading producer of tooling for the tube & pipe and roll forming industries conducts numerous tube and pipe training seminars and roll forming training seminars throughout the country. Recently, it has seen a new trend emerge as companies look to decrease training costs and improve efficiencies.
According to Robert Sladky, Vice President of Tube Mill Engineering, and Bret Molnar, Senior Technical Advisor for Roll-Kraft, “We are seeing a new trend in conducting seminars. More firms with multiple plants are consolidating their training programs and combining the attendees from multiple plants for their in-house seminars.”
This not only expedites the training of entire teams of personnel, but saves the costs involved in having individual seminars for each plant. It is by far the most efficient plan for these companies.
Such was the case recently for two of Roll-Kraft’s major tube & pipe customers in the East, and in the South. Each customer has multiple plants running smaller mechanical tube mills, as well as larger pipe mills. Management from each location got together and scheduled back-to-back weeks of programs at key locations, which allowed them to split up the attendees from their various plants and still keep production running on their mills.
This consolidation process has proven to be very successful, and future programs are planned for 2012.
Other firms without multiple locations simply schedule the mills to be down for a single day for their in-house training. One plant manager stated, “In the past we always made the excuse that we couldn’t shut down the mills to conduct training and kept putting it off. The fact of the matter is, we can’t afford not to. It is just a matter of scheduling and pre-planning. We are very glad we took the time for this training.”
The key areas covered in the programs are mill integrity, alignment, tooling design, setup, tooling maintenance, and developing a standard for all to follow.
Attendees are invited to comment on the training session. Recent comments include:
—“It brought more knowledge to me and will help me to be a more cautious operator. It also answered questions that I had and doubts as well!!”
—“This training will be useful to evaluate failures on products run, by looking at the setups and also the tooling. It will help me train mill operators.”
—“This will help me significantly due to being a new operator. It was very helpful because it covered and broke down all the aspects of the mill.”
—“It defines procedures that should be followed to be effective, but up until now, haven’t been.”
—“I feel the instruction was very helpful to our operation here because there are a lot of things that we are doing wrong. Thanks. Very good class.”
