Positioning Turkshead Rolls for Proper Operation

After the Turkshead tooling has been checked for alignment and integrity, the rolls can be positioned. Two common methods are used: feeler gauges and a setup plug gauge.

With the feeler gauge method, use the specified gap clearance provided by the tooling manufacturer. Start with one horizontal roll and one vertical roll, bring the clevises in, and check the gap between the roll flanges. This may take several adjustments. As adjustments are made, check that the transition between the flanges feels smooth.

Once one side is set, repeat the process on the other side. If the alignment and tooling integrity are correct, the top roll should come down with the gap equal all the way around.

A setup plug gauge can also be used. The plug is made to match the profile and roll dimensions. Open the side rolls, set the top and bottom rolls to the plug, and then bring in each side roll until there is no visible daylight between the plug and roll profile.

What to Check
