Proper preload is critical to the long-term performance of tapered roller bearings.
Bearings that are too tight may overheat and fail prematurely. Bearings that are too loose can create alignment issues, shaft movement, and inconsistent product quality.
Preload is measured as the amount of rotational torque required to continuously rotate the shaft. This measurement is typically taken using a dial-type inch-pound torque wrench.
Whether preload is adjusted using shims or double lock nuts, the goal remains the same: eliminate endplay while maintaining smooth rotation. Once the desired preload is achieved, the assembly should be locked in place, rechecked, and properly lubricated.
A properly preloaded bearing can provide years of reliable service while supporting consistent mill performance.
