Training, Documentation and Process Control: Turning Training into Lasting Operational Improvements

A successful training seminar can create strong momentum across a tube, pipe, or roll forming operation. Operators, maintenance personnel, engineers, and managers may leave with new ideas and a better understanding of what needs to improve. The challenge is turning that momentum into long-term results.

The key is participation and accountability. Everyone involved in the operation has a role in the mill’s success, and everyone should be part of the improvement process after training.

Start by holding a follow-up meeting to review what was learned. Identify the wants, needs, and concerns that came out of the seminar, then prioritize them. From there, develop a corrective action plan with a realistic timetable.

Standard operating procedures should also be reviewed. If SOPs already exist, update them based on what was learned. If they do not exist, this is a good time to establish them.

Once standards are set, everyone should be held accountable to the same process. The goal is to eliminate different methods between shifts or individuals and replace them with one proven way of doing the work.

What to Put Into Practice

  • Conduct follow-up meetings.
  • Prioritize improvement opportunities.
  • Develop corrective action plans.
  • Establish or update SOPs.
  • Hold personnel accountable.
  • Standardize best practices.
