Roll-Kraft Holds Annual Regional Tube, Pipe and Roll Form Seminars in Mentor

MENTOR, OH

Roll-Kraft once again hosted its regional seminar for the tube and pipe industry on August 19, with a seminar for the roll form industry on the following day. Both training seminars were preceded by tours of Roll-Kraft’s state-of-the-art corporate headquarters in Mentor, OH.

Robert A. Sladky, Vice President of Tube Mill Engineering organized the event and was one of the speakers both days, along with Bret Molnar, and Dave Rostocil, Senior Technical Performance Specialists.

Attendees from over 30 different and widely diversified companies graced the programs during the two-day event at the LaMalfa Holiday Inn Conference Center.

Sladky noted, “The audience participation in regard to questions, and interaction with the live tube and pipe and roll form displays was exceptional. The first program lasted a record 9 hours.”

“The comments from the seminar evaluations taken at the end of the program outlined many positive comments, and further supports the interest and continuation of these regional seminars.   Many firms have shown an interest in having their own in-house training programs to train their personnel on their mill lines.”

Attendee comments included:

  • Very valuable information that was not clearly addressed during actual on-the-job training back at our plant. We should have had this long ago.
  • This seminar has shown me things I can do while designing tooling that will prevent misshaping of the profile.
  • Robert & Bret work very well together to make the class both easy and full of information. This has shown me how the mill affects the tooling, not just the way that the tooling was designed.

Roll-Kraft’s next regional training seminar will be in early in 2016 in Houston, with tours of Roll-Kraft’s new facility. Be sure to check the Roll-Kraft Events page for information, as the seminar dates are finalized.  Announcements will be posted on www.roll-kraft.com and e-mail blasts sent to all of Roll-Kraft’s customer base.

Roll-Kraft Conducts In-House Roll Form Seminar for ClarkDietrich™

MENTOR, OH

Roll-Kraft recently conducted a corporate in-house roll form training seminar for ClarkDietrich Building Systems, one of the major suppliers of stud and track for the drywall industry.

Frank Gomez, Operations Trainer and Procedure Manager, as well as Mike Collins, Operations Director, and Jimmy Rickett, Director of Corporate Engineering for ClarkDietrich, coordinated the training event with Robert A. Sladky, Vice President of Tube Mill Engineering of Roll-Kraft, bringing in attendees from several of their plants across the nation to their Warren, Ohio, facility.

Robert Sladky, as well as Dave Rostocil, Director of Product Applications for Roll-Kraft, were co-speakers at the event, covering the important areas of mill integrity, alignment, setup, and trouble shooting for the roll form applications of ClarkDietrich.

The attendees were from a wide variety of experience levels, from the very new hires, to seasoned veterans of 20+ years.

“What made this program such a success, is that ClarkDietrich had key management personnel from many of their departments attend the program,” Sladky said. “So many times, only the operators are present for the instruction.  Management, supervisors, and lead men are vital to the success of any in- house seminar.  This helps to develop a standard for all to follow, organizing a ‘team effort’ of putting into practice all that was learned in the seminar.

“The other key factor is ‘they took the time’ to have this training.  All too often, plants are too busy to have training, to do maintenance on their mills, or to refine the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for their operation.  The correct approach is:  “You can’t afford not taking the time.”

The seminar attendees each received guide books that follow the PowerPoint presentation step-by-step. The in-house seminar presentation included action and procedural videos and was also supported by a real-life operating roll form display that actually produces parts.  This allowed the instructors to illustrate the effect of an improper adjustment that would result in producing a problem part from the roll former.  Roll-Kraft’s combination of resources and presentation materials offers one of the most comprehensive training programs known to the industry.

Visit Roll-Kraft’s website for more information on the in-house tube and pipe training and roll forming training programs available and held on-site at a customer’s location.

Upcoming Regional Seminars

Roll-Kraft’s commitment to excellence in the tube and pipe and roll forming education field continues in 2015 with several planned events.  This June, Roll-Kraft will head to the West Coast for its regional seminar training programs. A tube and pipe seminar will be held on June 24th and a roll forming seminar will be held on June 25th.

In addition, Roll-Kraft will host its annual training seminars at its Mentor, Ohio, headquarters. The tube and pipe event will be held on August 19th and the roll forming event will be held on August 20th.

Roll-Kraft Welcomes Students to Tour Plant

Roll-Kraft was pleased to welcome the 7th and 8th grade classes from the local Chardon schools to visit the company and tour the factory.  The students were greeted by tour guides who accompanied them through the various manufacturing operations and explained each process.  They observed the transformation of raw steel into roll tooling, which is then shipped to companies around the world, who manufacture products for the marketplace.  This custom roll tooling is used in the tube and pipe and roll forming industry to make a multitude of products that are used by the general population every day.

The students also toured the offices of Roll-Kraft’s Mentor headquarters.  They were interested to see how much of the manufacturing process is highly automated and computer driven.  During the visit, they observed a demonstration of Roll-Kraft’s Copra Finite Element Analysis software,  which is used to design a “virtual” set of tooling and test roll setups and operation before manufacturing begins, in order to improve any areas of weakness in the design.

Each group of students enjoyed lunch and were encouraged by the Human Resources Manager to pursue studies in math, English, interpersonal relations, Lean manufacturing, and various computer  programs, in order to prepare for the years beyond graduation, whether they enter the manufacturing field or choose another.

Roll-Kraft is committed to continuing to promote careers in manufacturing to today’s students.  The company is proud to be an active member of the Alliance for Working Together (AWT).  The AWT is a group of Northeast Ohio manufacturers who share a common mission:  to change the misperception of American manufacturing, shape the next generation of manufacturing professionals, and promote careers in manufacturing.

Roll-Kraft has its headquarters in Mentor, Ohio, and maintains other facilities in Frankfort, Illinois (Roll-Kraft Northern), and Ontario, Canada (Roll-Kraft Ltd.).  Calls to the company‘s main line, (888) 953-9400 or (440) 205-3100, are greeted by a live operator who can assist callers in quickly reaching a technician, engineer, or sales staff, who can provide immediate assistance.

Lean Processes Ensure On-Time Deliveries of Roll-Kraft’s Tube and Pipe and Roll Form Tooling

MENTOR, Ohio - January, 2015

Roll-Kraft has recently implemented Lean processes to eliminate common delays that hold up production.  Many manufacturing procedures have been scrutinized, re-organized, and some operations have been relocated within the building, for better flow of the product through the factory.  Using Six Sigma techniques, each step of the process has been reviewed and non-essential operations removed.  These changes have resulted in a more streamlined path and shortened lead times, allowing Roll-Kraft to strengthen the commitment to ensuring on-time deliveries to meet customer requirements, as well as maintaining the exceptional goal of first-time performance.

Roll-Kraft has consistently been a leading manufacturer of roll tooling for the tube and pipe industry. Lean processes, led by Lean Manager Kevin Hartman, who joined the team in 2013, have been important to the company’s goal, as improvements continue to be implemented at Roll-Kraft.

Lean process improvements implemented within the past year include:
